The Quiet Power of a Cohesive Design System

April 4, 2025

Divit Yadav, Creator of Bloom Design system

With Bloom, the focus was on building a system that feels consistent and intuitive. Beyond designing clean components and states, time was spent understanding how users navigate interfaces—what they notice first, how they scan content, and where friction tends to happen. The color palette and shades were carefully chosen to feel calm and unobtrusive, reinforcing clarity across the system. The result is a design language that guides interaction without getting in the way.

We’re still in motion.

At Bloom, the goal is to create a cohesive design system that caters to all needs and can be seamlessly integrated into any application. React components and accessibility guidelines are coming soon.

Research

The first step was figuring out how to design an effective design system by grounding decisions in solid insights—either through quantifiable metrics or qualitative research. This involved scouring the web and gathering resources from HIG and Material Design. A key reference was Apple's WWDC- 2018 (Apple Inc.)- How to design for Quality which explored many of the same principles being applied at Bloom. A brief summary of the user research is shown below.

The absence of randomness is a core principle of a design system and is directly tied to perceived quality. Once these initial questions were addressed, there was a natural shift toward gaining insight into the next one—

These insights align with the mission- Bloom is built on the belief that the best UI is unintrusive—powerful enough to support, subtle enough to let the moments shine.

What is the significance of quality ?

Why prioritize high-quality design? Why chase it? While some products may reach millions in revenue without a formal design system, companies like IBM have reported 75% faster design and 47% faster development using their Carbon Design System, while Lloyds Banking Group saved over £3.5 million through their Constellation system. A well-built design system isn’t just about aesthetics—it creates consistency, builds trust, and conveys that you care, all while showing real business impact.

After diving deep, i have summarized the impact or significance of quality into three pilllars-

  • Design Shapes Our World- Every interface affects how we interact with the world—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Bloom empowers you to design with that impact in mind.

  • Intention is Always Felt- Users can tell when something’s made with care. Whether it’s crafted or careless, your intention shows—and Bloom helps you make it count.

  • Trust is Everything- Trust isn’t built through features—it’s earned through clarity, empathy, and consistency. Bloom gives you the tools to create experiences people believe in.

Design system research

To build a truly end-to-end design system in Figma, the journey began with deep exploratory research. The primary audience? Designers working within the Figma ecosystem, looking to speed up their workflow without sacrificing quality.

To inform the structure and utility of the system, popular existing libraries were analyzed and categorized by use case:

For in-depth documentation and scalable components:

For design guidelines and best practices:

  • Micro-level (component & pattern level): Polaris by Shopify, GOV.UK Design System, Atlassian Design

  • Macro-level (platform-wide systems): Material 3, Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines (HIG), InVision’s Design Handbook

Design resources

To lay a strong foundation for building a design system from scratch—and to ensure industry best practices were followed—the UI Collective 7-part series proved to be an invaluable resource. It offered clear insights into documentation standards, component structuring, and troubleshooting common design system challenges.
